Are you a candidate for cataract surgery? Do you suffer from an astigmatism? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then Brumm Eye & Laser Center has an exciting new implant called AcrySof Toric IOL. The AcrySof Toric IOL is an intraocular lens implant used during cataract surgery to help correct astigmatism. Traditional cataract surgery uses a monofocal implant that only helps a patient with either near or distant vision but does not improve visual symptoms related to an astigmatism.
In 2005, the FDA approved the astigmatism correcting implant called AcrySof Toric IOL for patients suffering from cataracts and astigmatism. The AcrySof Toric is used to correct both conditions during one procedure. The AcrySof Toric IOL is a foldable, single piece lens that is implanted into the eye during cataract surgery to replace the cloudy cataract lens. The AcrySof Toric IOL significantly corrects corneal astigmatism and improves the distance vision after surgery. This intraocular lens helps to reduce the dependency on eyeglasses needed for distance or driving vision. Most patients only require inexpensive over the counter reading glasses for near tasks.
