Lifestyle Lens Implants Also Known as Premium
Brumm Eye & Laser Vision is pleased to announce the arrival of lifestyle or premium lens implants that can help you see better at all ranges of vision without glasses after cataract surgery. Previously, cataract surgery patients had only one choice for a lens implant, a monofocal lens implant that would correct far vision only and require fulltime glasses to see at all other distances. During your cataract evaluation with Dr. Bruce Brumm and colleagues, your daily visual requirements are reviewed and a premium lens implant will be suggested to match your visual lifestyle leaving you free from glasses for most activities you enjoy.
Select Lens Type To Learn More
Accommodating lens implants have garnered a significant amount of positive review and testimonials from thousands of early patient adopters. These special lenses are designed to mimic or accommodate, just like the eyes natural lens would. The hinge design of the lens enables it to move inside the eye just like the original eye's natural lens. The end result is that patients can see better at multiple distances. The only accommodating IOL available is known as the Crystalens, © Bausch & Lomb.
What is the Crystalens®?
The Crystalens © is an FDA-approved intraocular lens for the visual correction of adults with cataracts (clouded lenses) with or without presbyopia, or lenses that have aged or become more rigid. The Crystalens © was modeled after the human eye. Like the natural lens, it uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at all distances. The Crystalens © dynamically adjusts to your visual needs.
The effectiveness of the Crystalens© was proven in clinical trials:
- 98.4% of patients implanted with Crystalens© in both eyes could pass a driver's test without glasses
- 100% could see intermediate (24" to 30") without glasses, the distance for most of life's activities
- 98.4% could see well enough to read the newspaper and the phone book without glasses
- 74% of patients never or almost never wore eyeglasses
Significantly more patients implanted with a Crystalens© (88.4%) could see better at all distances than patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%).
Long-term experience means a safe and effective procedure – some patients have continued excellent vision 5 years after implantation with the crystalens. More than 40,000 crystalenses have been implanted worldwide.
The recovery period is usually short. Most patients are able to pursue normal activities almost immediately after surgery. Patients usually have a follow-up visit scheduled with the surgeon to evaluate the patient’s recovery. Discuss with your doctor beforehand what to expect before, during, and after the procedure in terms of eye drops and office visits. If you are like most patients who have the Crystalens®, you can expect to see everything more clearly. Your focus will be sharper than it has been in years, and you can expect to see improvements over time.
The Crystalens® Procedure
The Crystalens® procedure is simple and allows for relatively fast healing. After a small incision is made at the edge of the cornea, the lens is liquefied and the Crystalens® is implanted. Crystalens® can usually be implanted in about 15 minutes.

Multifocal IOL lens implants enable patients to see at near far and intermediate distances after surgery. The two major brand names in this category are the The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL by Alcon and the ReZoom by AMO. (Recently acquired by Abbott). With a multifocal IOL the central portion of the lens has a series of steps that are carved in a very precise arrangement with varying step heights and distances between steps. Each of the steps of this diffractive optic bends the incoming light differently; creating a near focus that is quite separated from the distance focus formed by the remaining refractive portion of the lens. This large separation between the two images allows for less artifacts or distortion in either of the images, providing good quality of vision at both distance and near.
AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL
The ReSTOR® lens is a multifocal lens implant that is designed to replace the natural lens of the eye after cataract surgery. Comprised of a flexible plastic material, the ReSTOR® lens has a patented design that allows it to focus light on the retina for clear vision at near, far, and intermediate distances.
The benefit for cataract surgery patients is a high level of spectacle freedom. Alcon has patented the application of apodization technology to an IOL, making the AcrySof ReSTOR lens the first and only apodized diffractive IOL.
During U.S. clinical trials, the results with ReSTOR were remarkable:
- 80% of patients reported that after lens implant surgery with ReSTOR lenses, (they no longer needed glasses or contact lenses to see clearly at all distances.)
- 94% said they could drive and read the paper without contacts or glasses.
- Nearly 94% were so satisfied that they would have the procedure again.
Toric Lens Implants are a unique type of lens implant that are used to correct astigmatism. A toric lens implant is NOT the only method of astigmatism correction so consult a doctor about the current possibilities. Asymmetric steepening of the cornea or natural lens causes light to be focused unevenly, which is the main optical problem in astigmatism. To individuals with uncorrected astigmatism, images may look blurry or shadowed. Astigmatism can accompany any form of refractive error and is very common. Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, corneal relaxing incisions, laser vision correction, and special implant lenses. If a cataract patient has astigmatism and has aspirations to be glasses free after surgery the Toric lens implant is a good option. Toric lens implants are NOT a correction option for presbyopia. The ACRYSOF® Toric lens implant is a popular choice for this type of lens. Learn more about Toric Lens Implants.
For Improved Vision After Cataract Surgery: The TECNIS® IOL…A Unique Multifocal IOL
Since you have been researching cataract surgery, you are most likely delighted that there are enhanced IOL options for after your cataract surgery. Some IOLs can help you see at one distance and others can help you see at multiple distances. In some premium lens implant patient situations glasses are not even needed anymore. This is truly a marvel of modern cataract surgery technology. The doctors at Brumm Eye and Laser Vision are proud to stay at the cutting edge of IOL technology and are happy to tell you about a new wavefront designed IOL lifestyle lens. This new lens is called the TECNIS® Lens. And is made by Abbott Medical Optics. One of the most profound benefits of improved functional vision with the TECNIS® Lens is safety. With compromised functional vision, even patients who have no problem reading the letters on an eye chart can be at a serious disadvantage in low-light situations because they have reduced contrast sensitivity.
What are IOLs or Intraocular Lenses?
Also KNOWN as Premium Lens Implants
IOLs are intraocular lens implants that are used in cataract surgery to replace the natural crystalline lens. These lens implants come in various categories but fall under 2 main areas. These main areas are MONOFOCAL lenses (one distance) or MULTIFOCAL (multiple distances). When cataract surgery first started all of the IOL lenses were monofocal. Since the year 2000 new IOLs have been developed and are helping patients see better after cataract surgery. The TECNIS® IOL is the FIRST and ONLY wavefront-designed lens implant to have claims approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for improved functional vision.
- We have also mentioned the Crystalens® IOL which acts similar to a MULTIFOCAL IOL but is actually and accommodating IOL which tries to move inside the eye and mimic the natural crystalline lens. Please see our webpage regarding the Crystalens® IOL because this is a very good option for many patients. If you have heard about the Crystalens® IOL and are seeking Crystalens® IOL doctors in Nebraska please contact us for more information.
The TECNIS® Lens is the only wavefront-designed lens with FDA-approved claims for improved functional vision and improved night-driving simulator performance. Good functional vision is especially important when driving at night. Based on night-driving simulator results in a controlled clinical study, the TECNIS® Lens provided improved visibility that may allow for quicker reaction time, which is likely to provide a meaningful safety benefit to elderly drivers. The improvement in functional vision may also improve safety in other low-visibility situations.
In addition to receiving sharp distance vision with the TECNIS® Lens, in many cases your doctor can also correct pre-existing astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery.
How Innovative is The TECNIS® Lens?
This is a VERY important breakthrough in IOL technology because wavefront technology can be applied to IOLs now, much like it was applied to LASIK eye surgery. The other main innovation with this lens is in the realm of contrast sensitivity. Original MULTIFOCAL IOLs often reduced the contrast sensitivity wheras the The TECNIS® Lens actually improves contrast sensitivity by reducing the higher order aberrations.
Clinical Data
- Possible Night Driving Advantages
- In a simulated night-driving study, at 55 mph the TECNIS® Lens provided an additional 45 feet of identification distance, allowing for a 1/2 second of additional reaction time, when compared to a leading competitor.
How Do I Choose an IOL Surgeon?
The outcome of your IOL lens implant surgery depends on the skill and qualifications of the eye surgeon you choose. Dr. Brumm provides a great deal of experience and qualifications to do this kind of surgery. Prior to selecting your surgeon you should validate the following:
- AAO board certification
- Experience and procedure volume
- Medical School training
- Technology overview
- Patient testimonial overview
- Safety and results of performed procedures

The First Steps to Resuming Life
If you suffer from poor vision, or think you might have a cataract, you should make an appointment to have a complete eye examination. Once it is determined that you are a good candidate for the ReZoom™ Multifocal IOL, you will be given additional information about the possible risks, complications, and costs involved with the procedure. Be sure to have all of your questions answered before giving your consent to have surgery.
Premium lens implants can be very exciting for patients that want to have a new level of spectacle freedom after cataract surgery. Due to the complex nature of each person's visual system, it is difficult for a patient to make an assessment about the right lens, without consulting a medical ophthalmologist. Therefore, we highly suggest a consultation with the doctors at Brumm Eye & Laser Vision before making any decision on a lens implant. For second opinions on lens implants please feel free to consult with our staff and doctors.
