My Cataract Surgery Experience (Toric IOL)

I had both eyes repaired by removing my cataracts.  Because of astigmatism I had the Toric IOL implanted.  Now I have over all 20/30 vision and the eye with the Toric is 20/20 and I no longer need glasses.  The surgery went better than I expected and the results were amazing.  Dr. Brumm is a master and I would recommend him highly.

My Cataract Surgery Experience (Crystalens IOL)

I’m enjoying my new eyes.  After wearing glasses for 65 years, it is a blessing to have the range of sight that I now have after the Crystalens implant without glasses. There are no blind spots when driving after dark and when passing oncoming traffic.  Daylight driving is better because I can read the street signs and license plates now.  I can thread a needle which was something I could not do for a long time without reading glasses.  Also, I can do fancy work, such as, crocheting, knitting, counted cross-stitch and etc.

My Lasik Experience 6/09

Category: Testimonials

My experience with Lasik was excellent!  I felt that the staff did a wonderful job preparing me for what the procedure and recovery was going to be like.  I even did this three weeks before my wedding! I think the most comforting part of this experience was during the surgery when Dr. Brumm and the staff members called me by name and told me each step of what was happening to decrease any worries or anxieties I may be having.  They would even give me a countdown of how long something was going to take so that I knew exactly  what was going on at each second!

I would highly recommend Dr. Brumm and his excellent staff to any patient!

Commentary on Lasik for Our Soldiers

Laser refractive surgery has had “a remarkable record of safety and efficacy” among the soldiers engaged in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, according to Lt. Col. Charles D. Reilly,, MD.

The most common complication found in a study done by Lt. Col. Reilly and 3 other ophthalmologists in Afghanistan and Iraq was deployment too soon after surgery.  Military personnel would go home on a break, have surgery and return to the field 2 weeks afterwards.  It is difficult to put drops in your eyes and dodge bullets at the same time, commented Lt. Col. Reilly.  But, during the 1 year study, Lt. Col. Reilly and his colleagues found no traumatic flap dislocations among patients who had undergone Lasik.  Dr. Reilly stated that they “found a remarkable record of safety and efficacy” with Lasik surgery.  Dr. Reilly added the caveat that the study was mostly Air Force personnel, and they are less likely to experience flap dislocation than ground personnel.

This commentary was take from and article in Ophthalmology Times, Vol 34, No. 12;  Pg. 1,32,33.

My Crystalens Experience 3/09
Category: Testimonials

I wasn’t sure when I first heard about the “Crystalens” implant for cataract surgery.  My concerns where put to rest by Dr. Brumm’s explanation and the fact he had completed many before me, so I did my right eye surgery first, which was the worst eye.

It wasn’t 20 minutes after surgery when I could see everything focused close up and how much brighter everything was!

Two months later I did the left eye and things just got better! I still use reading glasses for fine print, and now my worst vision problem is trying to find my sunglasses.
I must say Dr. Brumm’s staff is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure to be associated with; they are GREAT!!

Don’t put it off any longer.

My Intralase Experience 1/09
Category: Testimonials

When I began considering LASIK, I first called several providers in the Omaha area and got scheduled for exams and consultations as part of my interview/decision/selection process.

Right away, I was surprised at the vast differences between these establishments. These differences ranged from what I would consider minor, inconsequential differences to major, possibly sight-threatening. Each doctor I visited performed a thorough examination to include wavefront mapping.

  • The first doctor I visited insisted that I was a candidate for LASIK, despite my much thinner than average corneal thickness.
  • The second informed me that due to my thinner than average cornea, I was not a candidate for LASIK. However, I could have PRK surgery.
  • The third place confirmed my ‘thinner than average’ corneal thickness and that I was not a candidate for traditional LASIK. They too suggested PRK. However, they were also very high-pressure sales oriented, insisting that I, “…schedule the procedure today.”

The last place I visited was the Brumm Eye and Laser Vision Center. Dr. Walter verified the previous diagnosis of thin corneas and re-affirmed my lack of candidacy for traditional LASIK. However, he offered an alternative to the slow healing and sight restoration often resulting from PRK—he suggested Intralase.

This solution was perfect for me. Intralase overcame the thin corneal issue that standard LASIK could not. It also allowed me to enjoy the quick healing and immediate eyesight correction that PRK could not. Dr. Walter spent nearly an hour in the exam room explaining the differences in each procedure and answering all of my many questions in great detail. The entire staff was friendly and helpful--and most off all, no one tried to push me into a quick decision.

On the day of my surgery, Dr. Brumm was very patient, again offering me chances to ask questions. He was also very informative during each step of the procedure; explaining what was next, why, and how it would feel. The night of my surgery, he called me at home to check on me and to, once again, ask any questions I might have.

Without hesitation, I would recommend Brumm Eye and Laser Vision Center to anyone and everyone. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience from start to finish.

Thanks to everyone on your staff!

Sincerely,
R.J.S. Jr.

NASA Approves IntraLase Lasik for Astronauts
Category: Lasik in the News

The Wall Street Journal reports that NASA is now allowing applicants who have undergone IntraLase Lasik and PRK to be candidates starting with the 2009 recruitment class. This follows similar moves by the Navy and the Air Force regarding eyesight standards for pilots, who would not have previously qualified. The approval comes after clinical studies that were closely examined for both safety and quality of vision. Wavefront guided and femtosecond (IntraLase) lasers were proven to have excellent and consistent visual results and safety. Even in the extreme conditions of flight and warfare, Lasik was able to provide consistent visual results.

Applicants for the space program need a bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or math, along with three years of relevant professional experience. The high vision standards have been the number one reason, historically, why astronaut candidates fail.

Now with the IntraLase Lasik procedure, almost all of the severe, sight threatening Lasik complications related to the microkeratome are eliminated. The wavefront guided technology allows measurement that is 25 times more precise than the standard methods for measuring glasses and contact lenses.

The Defense Department's reviews of research found that:

  1. Custom lasik resulted in 95% of military personnel to see 20/20 or better uncorrected. The average patient was only able 20/400 (The Big E) before surgery.
  2. The study revealed that 76% of Intralase patients had uncorrected VA of at least 20/16 (better than 20/20). The microkeratome patients only achieved this 58% of the time.
  3. A study of 785 Naval aviators revealed 89% felt that their ability to land on an aircraft carrier was moderately to significantly better after laser vision correction. None said it was worse after surgery.
  4. A separate study of marksmen stated that 90% felt their marksmanship skills had improved after laser vision correction.

The Advanced CustomVue laser vision correction procedure provided by Brumm Eye and Laser Vision, stands in a class of its own. It has the broadest range of FDA-approved indications, and when combined with the precision and power of the IntraLase method, the procedure provides the most advanced Lasik technology available to patients today.
