Making the Decision

Choosing the best surgeon for vision correction is an important decision to make. Any time a person is confronted with surgery there are concerns. No matter how sophisticated the technology, the experience of the surgeon can make the difference between a good result and a great result.

Dr. Brumm is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist that has performed over 25,000 ocular surgeries and was one of the first surgeons in Omaha to be certified for LASIK. Dr. Brumm is certified in LASIK by the American Board of Eye Surgery. This board is the only ophthalmic medical certification board that tests eye surgeons on actual case histories as well as on their surgical technique and skill.

In September of 2000, Dr. Brumm was awarded board certification in the subspecialty field of refractive surgery (LASIK). This certification program was established by the American Board of Eye Surgery (ABES) in conjunction with the Professional Examination Service of New York City, as a means to identify those ophthalmic surgeons who maintain a high level of excellence as measured by their peers.

To gain board certification in LASIK, Dr. Brumm was required to submit a detailed record of 50 consecutive LASIK procedures. This record allowed examiners to assess surgical procedures, the indications for surgery, the appropriateness and type of surgery performed, the frequency of surgical complications, and finally the visual outcome and improvement following surgery.

Once Dr. Brumm was found to be an acceptable candidate following this preliminary evaluation, he was then contacted by the American Board of Eye Surgery to arrange live surgery evaluation via videotape. An onsite observer monitored five consecutive surgical procedures and obtained the videotape of each procedure as it was performed. The onsite observer completed a detailed checklist of observations made during each procedure. Following the completion of the surgical taping, the video tapes were returned to the American Board of Eye Surgery national office, copied and forwarded to surgical examiners (certified physicians trained by the American Board to evaluate surgical tapes) for evaluation. This review process was designed to ensure confidentiality and anonymity, thereby eliminating any possible bias and ensuring the objectivity of the examiners.

Upon successful completion of this evaluation Dr. Brumm became certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery in LASIK. He is distinguished as a member of a unique and exclusive group of eye surgeons dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in ophthalmic surgery for the benefit of you, the patient.
